omg so delicious
I can tell pretty much what vegetables are in the pan with the linguini pasta. What I cannot tell is if the brown items are mushrooms and some kind of meat (beef, sausage, clams, or squid) with shrimp and/or Octopus tentacles.
I only ate Octopus once in Gaeta, Italy and that was when my ship, the U.S.S. Capodanno FF-1093 was in port. The family that the ship was named after lived in Gaeta. Last count of total number of family members was around 320 in 1988.
A shipmate and me were hungry and we stopped at what we thought was a local pie shop and bought a Blueberry Pie. After eating a few bites, we soon learned what we thought was tasteless blueberries, were actually Octopus tentacles. We were sitting on the harbor wall when we found out. Needless to say, the fish in the harbor got a free meal that day.
A Caribinari Officer (Italian Military Police) walked by and asked what had happened. We told him our story and he went into the shop and emerged with a Blueberry pie. He said the shop owner knew what we wanted and played a little trick on us. We said no harm done, but the officer had already called his office to report the incident. The issue was out of our and his hands now. I told the Officer of the Deck on my ship what had happened and he instructed me not to go back to the shop. The Officer of the Deck then proceeded to tell the rest of the crew leaving the ship, to avoid the shop too. I hope the shop owner didn’t get into trouble with the Caribinari. It was just a joke and I still laugh when I remember what my shipmate’s face looked like when he found he was eating Octopus instead of Blueberries. Then again, my face probably looked just like his.
