While I was at the Today Show this morning I saw a story about a Memphis high school where 90 young female students were either pregnant or have given birth this year! I just couldn’t believe this and I find it so sad and disturbing. It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls. The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!

When I think back to when I was 16, there is no way I would even have considered having a baby. That thought wouldn’t even have entered my head. Having a baby is one one of the biggest, and most life-changing decisions a person can make and while I’m not saying that no teen is in the position to raise a child, having a baby so young shouldn’t be seen as the trendy thing to do.

Girls, please, think very carefully before you make these kind of decisions. Talk to your family, friends, teachers, and most of all, be careful.

Kim I really like your show but this is kinda funny coming from someone who has a sex tape and got famous for it. So in a way your telling everyone not to look up to you.

“The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!”

I love how funny your show is but young girls should not idolize you either or look up to you. You claim to fame is sex and using your body. just saying…

i agree. She makes a sex tape look “trendy” since she’s now a millionaire..give me a break, Kim. you’re no role model.

Oh Jeeze. She has stated several times young girls look up to her. I know I would be throwing stones at a glass house. She got famous for sex just like these young girls did. Did i put it more clearly for you to understand? I wont fight with a child(you) anymore.

I dont think Teen Mom & Sixteen & Pregnant glorify teen pregnancy but rather show how difficult it can be. While some of the girls do have a support system in their friends, family, and the father, you do see a break down in most of the relationships. It shows the struggles of finishing school and a lot of the girls dont go to college or even graduate. I dont think these girls (or anyone else for that matter) should be “idolized.” It is the media who puts them on the cover of magazines and most of the time its to show how horrible they are doing by being in jail, court, etc.

With that being said, young girls are going to make mistakes. They should not be condemned for this. If a girl gets pregnant and chooses to raise the child or give it up for adoption, they have done what thousands of girls are too afraid to do and that is give the child a life. They always have the option to have an abortion or worse(the storys we hear about where a baby has been found dead in a dumpster or garbage can.) What good is it going to do to condemn the girl after she is already pregnant?

The focus should be on how are teens being taught about sex in school and at home. ‘Just be abstinant’ is usually what they are being told on both fronts but as a teen you are going to make mistakes. We should also be teaching them about pregnancy, birth control and condems, and not just to prevent pregnancys but also to protect themselfs from diseases. If the only info you get is ‘dont do it’ its harder to make the best decision vs. getting ALL the facts and making that choice for yourself.

Kim this is so good that you are putting this message out for teen girls, because we look up to you! It is so disturbing. The show 16 and Pregnant does not help this problem at all because I think it encourages girls. Girls don’t realize the impact and seriousness when they bring a human being into the world. This is so important that you are bringing awareness of this situation. Thanks Kim keep it up your awesome and such a good influence on young girls!! Love you!!

not saying that what you’re putting out there and saying isn’t a good thing for teenage girls to know, but i am a teen mom myself. Its not something i chose to do, its something that was a mistake, but i wouldn’t give my daughter and the life i have with her now back for anything. yes, i might not be able to go out and party, but i graduated high school, and i’m in college, and i have a full time job. i in no way looked up to these girls on teen mom or anything, but if i turn the show on and see that other girls just like me are dealing with the same thing, it helps me get through the times where my daughter won’t stop screaming for anything or anyone at three in the morning. i am proud of my daughter, and myself for achieving something that a lot of people cannot do themselves. i just chose a different path.

You should be proud of yourself for what you are doing for you and your daughter. Going to school is hard on its own, but going while you have a child has to be extremely difficult. I know how frustrating a child can be. I also have a daughter. Being a mom is the most amazing thing I have ever experienced. I would not trade it for anything. I wish you the best. :)

i know exactly what your talking about. im 19 years old and i got pregnant when i was 18. my son is now almost 7 months old and he is the best thing that has ever happened to me. i agree with you about the show teen mom.. ever since that show became popular in my area in a radius of 15 miles or less, there has been so many teen mothers under the age of 20 and yes i am one of themm but some of these girls are pregnant or have newborns. it is scary the amount of teenage girls pregnant. i got pregnant in the beginning of my senior year. i gave birth 3 days after graduation day. i did not walk at graduation but i did graduate, after i gave birth about a week or so after my son and i went into my highschool and picked up my diploma, my highschool class and teachers were very supportive but i dont talk to any of my classmates. none. no one makes contact with me and i dont bother with them.. thanks for taking the time to read thiss.. have a happy new year!
