First off, Discriminatory against whites?? How is that possible? All affirmative action does is make sure everyone is given an equal chance. If they had been given that chance before there wouldn't be a need for it. There have been many studies that show that whites got preferential treatment just based on their skin color and were hired more than blacks regardless of the persons skillset. It just makes sure that a company highers a certain percentage of minorities to ensure that they are given jobs. Whites have if I need to remind you a 400 year lead on blacks who were enslaved for 400 years and whether you think so or not the consequences of that still live today. I'm not one of those militant people but its the truth racism is alive and well like you wouldn't believe comments on these blogs and comments from this very past election has proved such. The civil rights movement was only a few decades ago, minorities are thought of many times as inferior to whites and affirmative action makes sure that they are given a fair shake.

What may I ask though does this have to do with Obama being elected for president? He was elected because he was the best candidate. It had nothing to do with his race. I think it's great that he won. I was actually right in the middle, and I agreed with several things that both he and McCain believed. I think he has just paved the way for EVERYBODY, and shown us that we can do anything we set our minds to. I totally agree! As an African American myself what I feel about a black man becoming president is truly undescribable! I think you understand the historical achievement part of it but you don't understand i guess the empowering part of it. Blacks[and minorities] have always been put on the lower pedestal while whites seem to be put on the higher one. Barack becoming president proves that we are all EQUAL! And we can achieve great things regardless of our race.

It's exactly the same as when blacks & whites couldn't marry except now instead of race it's sexuality. And the fact that they used kids to make people choose to vote yes is pathetic.
Overall this election was major and I'm gonna be so proud to tell my children in the future that I was part of a black man becoming president.

I think alot of people got confussed on Prop 8 for the reason of wanting to let kids at school know that is okay to be gay. And alot of people beliefs are different is not that they don't want gay people to get married they could careless what they do with there lives. They voted yes on prop 8 for the sacred of marriage and for their kids. Alot of people would of voted No on prop 8, but they don't want their kids to be involved.

Im gonna be straight up with you. Im a republican all the way. I wanted John McCain to win, because I just feel that he's what the country needs. People have this preconceived notion that he's gonna be another Georgia Bush, yea to a certain extent yea because they are both republicans. But just because you thought Bush bombed didn't mean that McCain was gonna bomb. People always say that we didn't need another Bush. But the thing is we wouldn't. Somebody saying that mccain being president is like having bush all over again, is like saying that all African American's eat chicken. Which by the way is not true might I add. And in no way was I trying to be rasist when I said that. I was just using that as an example of how people like to stereo type since that one's a pretty common towards african americans. Im not gonna say that Im happy that he's our president because I am far from happy. But everyone's gonna have to learn to deal with it as time goes by. Even though I didn't want him as president, there's nothing we can do about it. What's done is done. Like McCain said "The People have spoken." I just hope Obama can prove us republicans wrong. I just pray that God has everything under control.

I'm really, really excited he won!!! I was holding my breath the whole time he was giving his speech... and I just wanted to scream out of happiness!!! As for Prop 8, I'm happy it passed... I have gay friends, my hair dresser is gay, I just don't believe MARRIAGE should be with the same sex. Leaving all the politics and everything behind, we're left with our beliefs and our morals, and I rather stick to that and be on God's side. Is it really worth loosing our salvation over?

i too voted for obama!! listening to his speech last night brought me to tears. i am not african american but i am a minority. im hispanic and i think that aside from a white person, a black person would win the presidency over any other minority. hopefully, this will open peoples eyes that maybe one day (soon) a hispanic or an asian can one day be president of the united states of america as well. we did it!! us young people voted him in. i am saddened by the propositon 8 passing. this MUST change!!

I can not even tell you the emotion that overcame me when Barack Obama won!! I was ecstatic! It was so surreal and still is. This means so much for America and I have no doubt that this country will be even greater with President Barack Obama as leader! This country showed us what it truly can be! Yes we did it!!!

From the very beginning Obama stood out for me as well. He came out strong during the entire election. I was just wondering have you ever taken a college course or actually know anything about taxes? People who make $350,000 pay the same percentage (about 35%) of taxes as people who make ANYTHING above that for example people making 10 million a year, they still pay 35% in taxes. That would be like since people making under $16,000 pay 10% in taxes, then people who make 90,000, or anything above 16,000 should then also pay 10% in taxes. DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. I was so happy to see Obama win but all day I kept checking to see if there was anyway Prop 8 would fail. I'm straight and have been with my b/f for 3 years but I was very interested in this Prop. My boyfriend and I fought over it and I stormed out of his house and we haven't talked much because his views piss me off. I can't help it. I think it's because of his parents and the things they tell him. They were for McCain and when I tried talk to my b/f and pointing out that his beliefs don't match with McCain he started to realize maybe he isn't for McCain after all. But then his dad got involved and when we started talking about the Props that's when I got very irritated... ESPECIALLY over Prop 8.

I don't want to start fighting with all the conservatives here, but I feel like it is a huge setback and hopefully it will not take as long for a gay couple to marry as it has for us to have a Black President.

I was just as psyched as you were when I heard that Obama had won. I couldn't believe it - history has been made and I had something to do with it. I think it's beautiful and a lot of changes will definitely happen with him in office. I really think that a lot of closed-minded people will try to ruin him though and that is too unfortunate. This is the 21st century and people are still so closed-minded. I heard that in Asia people were celebrating Obama's victory also. How cool is that? But anyways we have one thing in common, I was totally rocking my Obama shirt too way before election day. What a "wonderful" historic time in America! Martin Luther King Jr would be so proud to see that his dream has now come true. I personally liked Kim's outfit to vote. I love high waisted jeans and the cherry blossom pink colored button up was a subdued color that didnt shout or demand attention. Yeah, she had some cleavage showing, which some people may feel uncomfortable with, but I overall I found her outfit to be respectable. But I'm also have an extremely open minded view with clothes, so it might just be my personality.

It baffles me how a liberal state like california with it's "forward thinking" citizens would ban gay marriage. I just don't get it. The same people who voted for "change" when they voted for Obama also voted "yes" on prop 8. Wow makes no sense. Let's have change ALL AROUND. People should be able to marry anyone they want. I was beginning to think that you didnt want to get too political on your blog when you didnt post earlier today Kim, so I'm glad you did. I remember in back in 2004 when Barack Obama gave the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, I was so moved. I was only 15 then, but what he said spoke to me profoundly. I never felt so inspired by anyone, I literally mean anyone. He speaks to people's greatest hopes and aspirations which transcends anyone ethnicity, age group, or gender. So last night when I watched the results come in overwhelmingly favorable for him, I cried immediately. I am proud today, not only as an African American, but as an American in general. Change won't come easy, we all have to be willing to scrafice and do our parts..but I know that yesterday on November 4th 2008, we as Americans took the first step towards real change. Christine - i think some people are just saying that for minorities and those of the lower and middle class, Obama's victory has a more special meaning that others just can not understand. They have the right to feel that way. Being a minority myself, knowing that a African American man has become prersident, just feels like doors have opened for all of us minorities. I too was supporting Obama from the beginning, like many were. I am beyond happy that he won. I have never seen a man get so much praise and be so widely accepted all through the world. I saw images from China and Indonesia and Africa of people crying and jumping for joy when Obama was announced the winner. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's dream has FINALLY come true. What an exciting night last night was. It was absolutely worth the late night, the tears and heart ache of waiting in line for 5 hours. I was so EXCITED to be apart of thos defining moment in history. America was desperate for CHANGE and finally CHANGE has come. No one should feel that they can not achieve what they want to. With this change in American History, we can be whatever we want to be and don't think less of ourselves. This has opened up doors for younger people to get involved in politics, for your people to stay in school or go back to school. I am HAPPY that I was able to experience this, something I will cherish the rest of my life.

As for prop 8

I have to be honest and say that marriage is defined in the bible between a man and a woman. I don't agree with gay marriage however I am never discriminatory against the lifestyle. I have a brother who is openly gay however I can't disown him for his choosing of a lifestyle.

I'm quite interested to see how he is as a leader. I'm more than ready to Barack Obama in action before I make any judgments. I have really high hopes for him! :D As for Proposition 8, it is sad that we cannot let everyone be equal. Our country has been fighting for equality for years and years now. People need to let love flourish, regardless of gender and orientation. The attitudes of some of the people in this country saddens and disgusts me.

i love Obama.I have a teacher that hates him.She told me that he is going 2 get shot.When i told him that Obama won she answerd that was the worst day of her life.

im am so happy. he inspires me to do anything that i want. i know he will make a great president and im looking forward to the historic changes he will make. i am honored to be in this era in which history occured and in 15-30 years from now, my daughters & sons will read what happend in nov 4 of 2008 in the history books and it has been a again, an honor to have lived in it ; i cryed tears of joy when he won .you and obama has been an inspiration to me . i love you both and i cant wait to see you both and meet you ! that will be an unforgettable day of my life. god bless u kim =] love ya !

I love Obama!! I am soooo upset about prop 8 not passing too...I honestly don't know anyone who voted yes on it...its such a shame that people are so cruel and think its right to take away the right for gays to marry...the proposition should not have been made in the first place, I am disappointed in California but happy that you voted no!!..so glad you support Obama because otherwise I probably would not be a fan anymore lol...love you!!

i was literally in tears last night when i found out obama won. everyone in the dorms at my college were screaming their lungs out. it was crazy! i am sooo bummed prop 8 passed :( i was surprised it did because i only knew 2 people who voted yes on it.

I am too excited that Barack Obama won last night. It is an incredible feeling to have witnessed his winning last night. I am very excited about what he can do for this country.
